How does EFT work?

Works?

The question of how EFT works seems to be a very important for some people, even though they may not know really how many everyday things in their lives work, including their computer! These are my own thoughts on the subject...

In the normal course of a day, we experience many emotions, some feel good, others don't. Either way these feelings aren't permanent. For example, drivers frequently get angry at other road users but most of them don't hold onto that anger for very long; it is soon forgotten. However, when an experience is particularly intense, especially if we are very young and even more if it is repeated, then it seems to cause a more permanent change within us. Just thinking about our bad experience can cause intense emotion years after the event.

Those who accept the acupuncturist's view that an energy system flows around the human body believe that EFT works like this:- The bad experience that we suffered in the past caused a disruption in the body's energy system, a bit like a short circuit in a piece of electrical equipment. It is this disruption that causes us to have the unwanted emotional or physical response.

During EFT we tap on some of the body's main acupuncture points, whilst keeping our issue in mind. This has the effect of clearing the disruption in our energy system. We are then able to think about that same issue, but it no longer gives us the same response because the disruption is gone.

Brain cells

Others with a more western scientific outlook think that the tapping induces a mini-REM state in the brain which re-organises how we store and process information. Certainly it can be shown (with an EEG machine, which measures brainwaves) that brainwave patterns do respond to the tapping.

Since I have proven to my own satisfaction that EFT works for myself and others, I am intrigued but not overly concerned about this question. I'm quite happy to wait until science catches up and gives us a definite answer. However, if you don't like unknowns you can choose whatever belief you like best!

With EFT we tap on the body and expect it to alter the way we feel and think. Similarly EFT practitioners often find that a stored emotion can cause a physical pain in the body which vanishes when the emotion is released using EFT. Can this be true? What connection is there between our mind and our body? more..
