The mind - body connection.

mind-body

With EFT we tap on the body and expect it to alter the way we feel and think. Similarly EFT practitioners often find that a stored emotion can cause a physical pain in the body which vanishes when the emotion is released using EFT. Can this be true? What connection is there between our mind and our body?

Some people seem a little reluctant at first to think that the mind and body are linked in any way. Perhaps it is something that we don't normally consider. Even so, a few examples of this connection usually remind them that this is in fact true and that they knew it all along.

Have you ever felt really nervous about something? Having to speak in public perhaps or perform on stage in some way? How did that make you feel? Increased heart rate, "butterflies in the stomach", sweaty or cold hands, weakness in the legs possibly? People can be physically sick or be unable to speak because of the intensity of the fear in their minds. Incidentally, the fear of public speaking is often rated as our number one fear, coming in higher than the fear of death!

A similar reaction occurs when we have any phobic response. A phobia is an intense and unreasonable fear that is triggered by a particular object or situation. Someone who has a phobia of spiders for example is likely to have an increase in heart rate even if they just visualise a big hairy spider in their minds.

Consider also the effects of stress. Stress exists only in the mind, but it can have an extreme effect on the body. It is often a contributory cause of stomach problems, including stomach ulcers, it heightens blood pressure and lowers immunity levels. I know that in my own case, when stress levels are too high, it is my stomach that first gives physical warning signs. Anyone who has an anxiety or panic attack knows that the mind and body are certainly connected.

Once you start to think about the connection between mind and body, more examples soon pop up. You may well have thought of examples from your own experience now, but if not try this well known exercise:-

lemon juice

Imagine that you have in front of you a bowl of lemons, a sharp knife and a chopping board. Take a lemon from the bowl. Feel its waxy yellow skin & see that it is covered in those little dimples. Smell the lemon. Now place it on the board and cut it in half with your knife: be careful that non of the acidic juice squirts into your eye! As soon as you cut into it you can smell the sharp scent of lemon juice. As you look at the fruit you can see the flesh inside and the juice oozing from it. Now pick up one half of the lemon, perhaps pick off the pips that you can see, some of which have been sliced by the kife. Have a good look at it, because you know what's coming next don't you? That's right, put the lemon to your mouth and take a big bite…

Now how do you feel, what is happening in your mouth?
